Irish Referendum Meeting on Youtube

Monday, 26 May 2008

The Information Workshop was organised by the Independence/Democracy Group of the European Parliament, in the Parliaments office in Dublin on 12 January 2008. It was presented by Kathy Sinnott, MEP and Sharon Ellul-Bonici, EUD Vice-President. The speakers were Jens-Peter Bonde, MEP, Klaus Heger and Christophe Beaudouin, as legal experts and Anthony Coughlan and Patricia McKenna from the part of the Ireland.

The opening part of the meeting can be found HERE.  Before leaving you you to watch however, we want to give you a few quotes from the speeches held.

Jens-Peter Bonde explained to the audience in his characteristic, straight to the point-style, the main problems of the Lisbon Treaty. He said:

What was signed by the Prime Ministers is a document they never ever read. Why? Because it cannot be read. This is not a treaty. This is three hundred pages of amendments to three thousand other pages of treaties.[]They do not want the text to be read, the order is sign, read afterwards

Thankfully, now we are however able to read the Treaty trough our Read Friendly, Consolidated version, which you can download for free HERE or buy online on www.eubookshop.com.

Patricia McKenna herself made a very interesting point in the defence of a critical position on the matters of the EU. In this part of the debate, she said:

I can stand up to any platform in this country, I can criticize the government []and nobody has ever accused me of being anti-Irish. But, criticize the EU, and youre anti-European
