eudebates - democracy

On July at EUDebates: Democracy

The infamous "democratic deficit" within the EU has never truly been addressed nor rectified. There is no genuine separation of powers, laws are initiated by unelected civil servants and the European Parliament still does not have the powers of a real parliament.

The EU is as far removed from its citizens as ever and each European election heralds a new all time lowest turnout. In addition, more and more sovereignty is being transferred from the member states to an ever enlarging EU. The "democratic deficit" is of concern to many individuals and NGOs who fear there will be a bigger increase in the loss of democracy. There are two opposing arguments on how to improve the democracy in the EU; these two positions were the basis of the debate. They are:

1.) Give even more power to the EU and limit the influence of the nation states through the creation of a United States of Europe with a properly elected government.

2.) Restrict the power of Brussels and give back sovereignty to the member states. A confederation of sovereign and democratic states instead a European super-state is the only possibility for greater democracy.

The first position was defended by Michele Ciavarini Azzi, president of the Union of European Federalists (UEF) - Belgium.

Thomas Rupp, our Communications and Networking manager defended the second position, insisting on the necessity to fully improve democracy at the national level before pretending to build up a "supra-national democracy".

Our second EUDebates was held in our office at rue du Trone 113, 1050 Brussels, a nice and lively environment. After an hour and a half of debates, we enjoyed some food and refreshments in an informal atmosphere on the EUD terrace.

EUDebates - What is it?

EUDEBATES is a series of monthly debates on topics surrounding urgently needed EU reform. We invite experts to present their views after which the floor is open for lively debate. EUDEBATES takes place in an informal and relaxed environment. We want to provide a space for an exchange of ideas among open-minded people who have differing opinions on the topics, and we hope for an enriching experience that deepens understanding. Following the debate, you can take the opportunity to meet new people and enjoy a drink or two.
