17 July 2007: EUDebates on Democracy
Our second EUDebates' topic treated of democracy. Although this is an extremely vast subject, our two proficient speakers exposed two opposed points of view, giving the audience the possibility to react. As a result: a lively debate, some new ideas, and the great satisfaction to have had a frank reflexion about the EU in a demystified atmosphere! more
21 June 2007 - Alternative Family Portrait
During the European Summit of 21 and 22 June, the EUD has taken part to an event organised in Brussels by British think tank Open Europe and German organisation Mehr Demokratie. The event featured an alternative family photo with cardboard representations of the Heads of States and Governements putting their fingers into their ears, sign that they do not listen to the people when talking about the future of Europe! This event was a great success as many media were interested. more
12 June 2007 - EUDebates on transparency
On the 12th of June we organised a debate, first of a series, in a restaurant nearby the European Parliament. During this debate, we focused on the lack of transparency in the functionning of the European Union and tried to find out what were the appropriate solutions to implement in order to fight against corruption and guarantee the public a large access to information. Our speakers were Jens-Peter Bonde (MEP), Bruno Waterfield (Daily Telegraph), Paul de Clerck (Alter-EU) and Rune Rasmussen (Transparency International). more
23 - 25 March 2007 - The Berlin Conference
On March 23 to 25, the Heads of States and Governments have met in Berlin to celebrate the 50 years of the Treaty of Rome. During the European Summit, Angela Merkel asked all member states to sign a common declaration on the future of Europe called the Berlin Declaration. This document, cornerstone of Mrs Merkel's strategy to relaunch the talks on the Constitution, was meant to clear the way for a new agenda and set up priorities for the June Summit. In the meantime, along with German organisations Mehr Demokratie and IND, the EUDemocrats organised an international conference in Kreuzberg, Berlin, from which an Alternative Berlin Declaration was issued. The message is clear: no more treaties without the consent of the people! more
