Facebook and EUD Malta

Wednesday, 16 April 2008

Launched in 2004, Facebook is a social network that has gathered more than 69 million users within its pages. Created initially as an university network for students, it is now the place to go for exchanging photos, ideas or simply staying in touch with friends and like-minded people. Facebook has now a wide number of groups dedicated to all sorts of causes – it is open and with the exception of a few countries where it is banned exactly due to its open nature, it can be used as a wonderful tool for debate and sharing information. Recently, one of the EUD member organisations, EUDemocrats Malta, has launched a Facebook group. It is called EUD Malta and has reached in a very short time more than 70 members. The group does not only have a lot of interesting content on it, such as videos from various EUD related activities, but also a few discussion boards. An interesting topic is for example one called “How much do you know about the Lisbon Treaty?” It deals with how well informed EU citizens are with the treaty that will change their lives in such a radical fashion. A rather thorny truth is that in the Union most people have no idea of the nature of the Treaty, or the changes it will bring. Most have not and will not even be asked whether they agree to these changes. A EUDemocrats Facebook group will be launched sometimes in the near future, but until then we encourage all our members to follow the example of EUD Malta. National groups can only help further the cause of democracy and support the goals of the EUD, as well as help us build a more democratic Europe.
