EUD Press Release - Referendum in Croatia

 2012-01-19

If Croatia votes no – a new possibility for Europe will rise

We support a democratic, open and tolerant Europe. We believe that if Croatia votes no to EU membership it can open the door for broader co-operation in Europe. Norway and Switzerland are excellent examples of how a country can work better by not being member of the European Union. Membership of the European Union is not necessary for integration and the peaceful development of Europe.
In fact, the Euro crisis and the European Union budget policy actually create new tensions in Europe. By saying 'No' to EU membership Croatia can open up for new possibilities to develop true democracy and tolerance in Europe.
Croatia should have a free and fair referendum about whether or not to join the European Union. This requires that a referendum be called well in advance - at least 90 days before it actually takes place. The 'Yes' and 'No' sides must get equal time in public service media and the state should provide for basic possibilities through public information money for both sides to arrange their campaigns. The state or the EU institutions should not be used to support either side.
Does Croatia fulfill these conditions?

Every Croatian citizen should ask himself/herself before the referendum:
-    Does a yes vote to EU improve democratic governance of my country?
-    Does it improve for my country to get the euro as a currency?
-    Does it improve the possibilities of my country to co-operate with the rest of the world?

When the citizens of Croatia vote on EU membership they must consider that the European Union of today is not governed by the peoples of the member states. The European Union is governed to a large extent by two persons – Sarkozy and Merkel. Furthermore, the will of the peoples is not taken into account.
In many countries for example, the Constitutional Treaty was rejected in referendums. This did not bother the leading politicians at all and they saw to that the Lisbon Treaty was put in place instead without consulting their citizens, except for Ireland were the referendum was held twice in order to finally get a yes vote.

Dear Citizens of Croatia
Say no to centralized European institutions.
Say no to a Europe doomed by euro crisis.
Build a decentralized and open parliamentary democracy in your country based on openness and tolerance. The European Union is not the answer.
