On the occasion of the EU Democrats’ Annual Meeting held on 18 June in Budapest, the EUD leadership and the Peoples’ Movement against the EU in Denmark released the followingstatement:
Fortress Europe is the wrong way for Europe
The European Union has supported and cooperated with dictators in Northern Africa over many years. Not only through giving money, but also by selling weapons. The dictators have in return prevented humans in need from crossing the waters and seeking asylum in the European Union.
EU Democrats do not believe that Fortress Europe was the answer to the development in Northern Africa, and we do not believe it is the answer to the challenges of today.
European nations should not only support a sustainable development by words but also by action. A first step must be to ban all European weapon export to non-democratic states and to secure a well-functioning asylum system through the United Nations.
We all have a responsibility in making the world better. Fortress Europe is truly the wrong way for Europe.
Mrs McKenna was re-appointed Chairwoman of the EUD Alliance during the meeting. Patricia was the first Green Party candidate in Ireland to be elected to the European Parliament in the 1994 election and was re-elected in 1999. Patricia acted as one of the Dáil advisers to Ireland's first Green Party Teachta Dála (TD), Roger Garland. She is a strong advocate of Irish neutrality.
The EU Democrats is an alliance of national parties, movements and parliamentarians across Europe that believe decisions must be made as close to the citizens as possible. Our members and allies are against further centralization of power in Brussels and work for the devolution of power from the EU to national and regional parliaments.
In connection with the EUD Annual Meeting, its members attended a Workshop on International Indebtedness and the future of the Eurozone focused on the current challenges faced by Central European countries. Mr Karoly Lorant chaired the event with the participation of Janos Plenter, Peter Henseler, representatives from the Hungarian Economists' Association, local Trade Unions and the European Trade Union Confederation.
